Does anyone know a modern-day TV character that somewhat relates to the Friar from The Canterbury Tales? My teacher assigned us a character from Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales." I was assigned The Friar- a man of God who would naturally seem good and pure, but is actually a bit of a shady guy. What did you do growing up without Cells , Computers , TVs & other modern gizmo's as a youth ? What do you do for fun ? Thanks All . D :) And our parents told us to stay outside and play... all day long. Oh, no, no electronics to soothe and comfort. And if you came back inside... you were doing chores! And car seats - oh, please! Mom threw you in the back seat and you hung on. If you were luckily, you got the "safety arm" across the chest at the last moment if she had to stop suddenly, and if your head hit the dashboard, well that was your fault for calling "shot gun" in the first place!

Where can I find those "documentaries" that new TVs on display show at shopping malls? When you go to TV's area at shopping malls most of the TVs show a kind of high quality documentaries (glass making, cooking, exotic beaches, modern cities, etc), so customers can check the quality and features of the TV before buying. Do you think that modern celebrity chefs cookery programs on TV and their books do seriously contribute to? improve the cooking standards of the population. Do you think anscient people were smarter than Modern ones.? Take the Socrates' example, he was an original and powerful thinker, but I wonder if those anscient people were smarter than todays modern thinkers. And would be this because anscient people didn't have Tv or other modern sources that keep our mind distracted from introspection?

Anyone know the name of a German documentary/reality TV show with families living in modern housing? This show was on in the mornings when I was visiting Germany in summer of 2006. I just remember it being like a documentary where they showed German families living in modern housing -- maybe in Berlin? -- and how their lives intertwined. Anyone know the title and/or if it's available on DVD? Thanks so much!
What do you think is the reason TVs have to go digital? It can't just be because the media or government, whatever, wants us to see a clear picture, is there more to it? perhaps piracy? or just using the ruse of piracy for something else? or just for the sake of being more "modern"? and even if it's to prevent piracy, can't pirates just find new ways to get free cable? P.S is anyone happy or upset about this change? because I for one can't get certain channels with a regular antenna even with a digital TV and it kind of force me to just pay for Direct TV
Why do the skulls of mummies and ancient man seem to have straight teeth and modern man has crooked teeth? When mummies or other remains of pre modern humans are shown on tv or displayed in museums how come they all seem to have straight teeth whereas most modern people seem to have crooked teeth? Can I purchase a TV and just add a cable onto it to get local channels? I just recently bought a new T.V. and my wife isn't willing to purchase channels. I remember an old TV I had, and there was a cable or wire that stuck out of it and we were able to get the local channels off of that. Can this be done with modern TVs now, and where could I find a cable or wire like that?
can a person live normal and happy life without the modern annemities? we say that we live in a very materialistic world, and we will be lonely or even would not live long if this annemities will be taken away from us, these material things like our car, refrigerator, swimming pool, dvd player, microwave oven, gas ranges, and specially cellphone Ipod, PSP, LCD tVs etc..etc..do you really think taking away this accesories of our modern life will kill us or shorten our life, and can we never return to those days of simple things but happy.?
How can I deal with my hatred of the modern life? I hate everything about the world we live in. Everything is filthy and cold. I took the train for the first time this summer and was expecting to see large wood panels on the walls and small tables inside the train with lace cloths and little candles. I also thought I would see those 1800s-like lamps on the walls. It turned out to be cold and evil. I felt like I was in 2040. Everything was white and futuristic. I hate our day and age. I want to live in the 50s. I want to wear a fedora and a trench and smoke a cigarette and use a 50s car. I like old TVs, because our modern TVs are cold-looking and rude. They look like they can slice your neck open. Cell phones are equally cold-looking and look dangerous and like tools belonging to aliens. I do enjoy a few things from our day and age, like the Internet, but asides from those very few things, everything sickens me. Also, today, in Canada, in the middle of January, it's -4°C. For us, real Canadian kids who were born before the early 2000s, -4°C is summery and we had to walk in -40°C weather to go to school. Kids nowadays don't understand that and although I'm 18, it upsets me. It upsets me that times are changing and becoming more modern.
Do modern electronic systems also have operating systems? I am curious. Today, we have DVD players, digital cameras, CD players, LCD TVs and mobile phones. They are all related to the computer. Do all these devices have operating systems in them? If so, what are the operating systems? Windows, Linux? Do they also have CPUs? If so, what are they? AMD, Intel? How do their Operating Systems differ from the operating system of the PC?
How do you hook an atari 2600 up to a "modern" television? It has one output cord - tried to plug it right into the video input on my television but to no avail. It came with a little converter/hookup box that has the old VHF/Antenna things that you attach to screws at the back of your television but while I remember that they used to exist.... they defintely don't on my tvs. I saw it working - but was on an older television.
I want my apartment lounge to look really modern and "boss". What lighting should I go for? Obviously a standard light shade with a energy saving light bulb doesn't fit in with leather couches and black glass TV stands with large LCD TVs. What's the latest "fashion" for lighting? Spot lights? Self standing uplighters in a corner? Wall mounted lights?
are computers an TVs stopping kids reading if so why? What do you think?only in our family after walking and talking the emphasis even pre nursery has always been on teaching the kids to read - a kid with a book can avoid boredom a lot more for a start. Only in one case(a cousin who's mother was very ill and who was taken away from home for a few-damaging-years)was it left to the schools. She left at 15 unable to read or write, taught herself both!another child(fostered by me at 13)was not taught properly at school so when she left I paid for evening classes, she soon caught up and was able to earn a living. Proper teaching in schools would help as not all families are like ours and with tv and computers to use PROPERLY my grandchildren are doing fine so do you agree that rather than tv and computers being to blame for lack of that skill it is apathy on the part of parents and teachers in the majority of cases?and that good books and teachers is a great boon to children today together with modern technology not instead/in spite of it? Yes ladyhawk8141 but why haven't they? my grandkids wr 16 10 and 9 and all read use computer and watch tv and go to parks and walks and dancingf an are learning musical instrunents we arew not a family of geniuses but we do bother to encourage them and if we can do it so can others (my son is a teacher but it applies to teachers to -he gets kids who cant to do and those who wont to want to - so?) unmfortunately like a lot of pareent the expenses of travel (no car) and admission tends to preclude seaside and museums, as sadly it does theatres and overseas trips but Parks and walks with mum (and / or dad) or the odd bus ride to feed waterbirds at the nearest river (in uk never far from a river and they are not as dangerous as some american rivers for instance)costs little. Please all excuse typos as what with keys sticking and hand problems it is a bit awkward so do forgive.
Is burn-in still a problem with modern plasma televisions? I'm looking at getting a 42" Hitachi Director's Series Plasma HDTV. I've heard conflicting things about burn-in. The salesman said not to worry, because newer TVs have "orbiters" that rotate the pixels so it's not a problem, but I've found plenty of things online talking about how you shouldn't play video games or use your computer with a plasma. What's the real deal? Am I going to be safe using things with very static images like PCs, TiVo menu, etc.?
In this era of set-top boxes and flat screen TVs, can TVs bought in Europe (PAL) now be used in USA (NTSC)? TVs have in the past have not been interchangeable between Europe and USA because of differing transmission standards. With set-top boxes for a local TV service-provider now almost mandatory as a TV receiver, and modern flat-screen TVs essentially large computer monitors, can TVs now be used between Europe and USA (PAL and NTSC/ATSC) simply by ensuring the appropriate digital receiver (set top box) is used, or does it remain an issue?
is modern warfare 2 lan party split screen possible on ps3? is it possible to do a lan party split screen on mw2? we have 2 ps3s and 2 TVs but couldnt find how to split screen... we're assuming each player needs to have their own ps3 and own tv which sucks
Is most modern science a lie? How can we possible be sure about the lies they tell us in science class. Has anyone actually seen an electron? No, so how do we know it exists? Same goes for the structure of the atom. Microscopes can't see that far down and never will because atoms probably don't exist. And don't confuse technology with science. Technology is what gives us computers and TVs that we use to spread the word of the Lord. Science is what evil scientists do. i'm not a troll I'm a true christian so people stop saying I'm a troll. A troll is an evil godless creature To andrew: those are just dots that scientists probably drew themselves, they don't prove atoms at all To John: gravity is a lie
Engineered to fail after X amount of years? For all you engineers out there, do you think that modern consumer goods (TVs, ipods, computers, cars, etc) are designed to break after a while? and if so, how much effort do engineers put into ensuring this? i would like your reasons as to why you say yes or no please. Cheers!
System link with Modern Warefare 2? WHY NOT? Im just really curious why you are not allowed to split screen system link in modern warefare 1 or 2. I just want to know the logic behind this. I really want to be able to have 16 of my buddies come over and play cod but cant because we dont have 16 360's and 16 tvs with 16 controllers and 16 modern warefare 2's. Why do we have to do this to system link?
Can computer monitors be tvs? I am shopping for a monitor for an older HP Pavillion Tower. I want to get one that can also be a tv. What kind of hook ups would it need and can the tower connect to the modern monitors?
Why did older TVs go "bDONG!" when turned on? ..because modern ones don't? No - really....does anyone know about these things? What was different on TVs about 10 yrs ago that made them bDONG when the on switch was activated?
Would it be possible to modernize an old-fashioned wooden TV? I was thinking that would be cool because then people could have the beauty and intricacy of the designs of the older TVs with the additional benefit of modern technlogy. Queen delishus, that tv is really cool. I was actually talking about just the shell of an old fashioned tv itself, but I really like that one also. Here is the link if you or someone else wants to check it out http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/shows_toh/article/0,,HGTV_3895_1926639,00.html
How do 'normal people cut their Co2 emissions? With rising energy and fuel prices how we us normal citizens cut our Co2 emissions. I mean in this modern world, with washing machines, driers, multiple tvs, pc and other appliances in each household. What can logically be done to reduce our effect on the planet and also the holes in our pockets without unduly affecting our lifestyles?

What is the name of the this type of looney tunes episode? I used to remember watching looney tunes or merrie melodies or something like that it i used to love these kinds of episodes where there would just be the narrator talking about all these "modern" inventions, as the in 1950's or 1960's. I remember there was a episode about the different types of tvs and some were underwater etc and they were funny. I want to know the name of the episode please.

Which kind of life do you prefer? Which kind of life do you prefer to live in? Do you prefer to live in the life of the Industrial Revolution in the 19th Century where everything was still backward but life was affluent? Or do you prefer to live in today's modern high tech society with TVs, computers, cars or aeroplanes, but life is a bane due to the financial crisis and due to increased business competition world wide? Which would you prefer?
If the earliest (modern) humans were from Africa, then how come Africans cannot make planes, computers, tanks? , ships, TVs, cars, etc. like Europeans ( and their descendants ) can? http://www.scientificamerican.com/blog/post.cfm?id=new-research-pinpoints-origins-of-h-2009-04-30 And it wasn't even north Africa, but rather south Africa, albeit in the Ice Age ( so don't think south Africa of today ).
I have a house TV antenna from the 1960s - 1970s. I want to use it for a couple TVs.? When I plug it in though with a DTV converter box on the TV's I only get 1 channel. I live near Dayton, OH and should be able to get a few channels. Does anyone have any links for sites with modern house atennas that would allow me to get better and more channels?

Concerning Modern Warfare Two Multiplayer Battle...? Hey guys, I am just having a few mates around tonight to muck around at my place. I have a ps3 and two controllers, and my friend has another ps3 and two controllers, and we can fully set up the whole lan connection thing. My friend owns a copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. So I was wondering, is it worth me going to the Video Store to borrow out a copy? The whole point would be two have the two ps3s connected via lan, so that four of us can battle each other on deathmatch or whatever, across two tvs so that we each have a bigger screen to look at? Will this work for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2? Sorry if this isn't clear, just ask some questions if it's not. Thanks in advance for your help and time.
Any chance that Mid East mentality catches up to modern times? They have been killing themselves off for thousands of years, as of the last 60 years or so they have branched out to cause trouble in other regions. 60 years after causing WWII the Germans and Japanese are building and selling cars and TVs to the rest of the world and not promoting violence. After being reduced to ruble they are now prosperous and productive. What will it take for mid eastern countries to be able to co exist in peace with the rest of the world?
Do you only have to shoot the tvs in the level called Charlie Dont Surf in Call of Duty 4, to get the Achiv...? In the video game called: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare do you have to shoot all of the television in the entire game or do you just have to shoot the ones in the level called Charlie Dont Surf to get the "Your Show Sucks" Achivement
Where in Bahrain can I find the following services:? 1. A quality butcher 2. A quality fruit shop 3. A good maid 4. A modern furniture store 5. A decent electronics store, for TVs 6. A satellite dish store ie for Dreambox 7. A good fishmonger I know some of the above places are in some supermarkets like Geant, but I'm not a fan of buying fresh food (like meat, fruit, veg and fish) from a Supermarket, so I want to know are there some good alternatives out there.
Do big-screen HD TVs/monitors without tuners exist? I'm contemplating replacing my old 58" analog CRT RPTV (Pioneer Pro-610HD) with a more modern digital display. It occurred to me that I don't need any tuners in the display because I use a cable box with DVR for television. My only other input devices will be high-def disc players. So I don't need a TV tuner at all. So my question is whether any of you know of any HDMI-capable HDTVs in the 60" range which have speakers built-in but omit the TV tuner. I want built-in speakers because sometimes I just want to "watch TV" without firing up the home theater system. And I will need at least two, preferably 3 or more, HDMI 1.3 inputs. Thanks for any pointers. To follow up on all the good responses so far... would it make any sense for me to buy a so-called "HD Ready" TV as opposed to a true HDTV? Or are the HD Ready sets all obsolete now?
modern warfare 2 system link? have seven people coming over for a birthday party i have 2 tvs two xbox 360's and the cord to connect them together can i play 8 player split screen four on each tv for a total of eight in the same game so can i have eight people in the same game?
No headphone socket on LG TV - what do i need to buy to use headphones? Hi, I've got a 32 inch LG LCD TV into which I was hoping to attach a pair of headphones. However, there is no headphone socket. If i could turn back time i would of just bought a TV with a headphone socket, but its too late. Is there any other way I can get the headphones to work? Suerely LG would have realised that a lot of people may want to use headphones atttached to their TVs? I find it unbelievable that modern TVs would be made without a socket for one. Cheers for any advice, Jamie
What is the best way to output a PC signal (audio/video) on a HDTV ? Ok, so I recently got a 42" HDTV (http://www.samsung.com/ca/products/tv/lcd/lnt4042hxxac.asp?page=Specifications) and I want to plug my PC to it. For the video output, I have a Radeon X1650 Pro PCI-E video card with a Dual-Link DVI output and a S-Video output. Also the following connector were included in the box : DVI to VGA connector, S-Video to component (YCbCr) and S-video to composite (Y). As for the Input, well my TV have every standard input modern TVs have : HDMI, Component, Composite, S-Video and a PC input (which seems to be a VGA). I have no specific sound card, just the native one on the mother board. So what would be the best way (good quality and fairly cheap) to do this and with what cables/connectors ? Thanks a lot.

Which is worse for my eyes a 50' tv or 26' TV from a 3.3 metre viewing distance (Please read detail below)? I currently have a 26' CRT tv and am looking to upgrade to a 50' plasma but when I try to imagine watching the 50' from 3.3 metres away I feel it will be too close and that my eyes will be darting all over the screen and the illuminosity will be too bright for my eyes thus resulting in eye strain - even though the Viewing Distance Calculator recommends a viewing distance of only 1.8 metres. I'm going on the old addage that sitting too close to the TV is not good for your eyes but this doesnt seem to apply to the modern TVs or does it?
HD tvs and older gaming platforms? Now you must forgive my ignorance I'm not much of a modern creature but if I'm buying an HDTV will i still be able to connect my Gamecube and Ps2 without any additional hardware than what comes stock? Displays Resolutions up to 1080p High Definition with Built-In HDTV/ATSC Tuner ATSC/NTSC/QAM Built-In Video Features: Hi-Resolution Panel Inputs: HDMI Outputs: S/PDIF Don't know if that would assist any... I'm sorry! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh, it also doubles as a computer monitor if that matters.
MAD TVs Native weatherman who was he? I remember when I was watching MAD TV they had a skit were a Native American was portraying a weatherman. It was so funny, I think his name was "Little-Cloud?" Or something like that. Instead of him using a modern weatherman board he made one himself with Native American symbols. IT WAS HILARIOUS! And I would really like to know if there is a YouTube video of this because I would love to see this skit again. Can someone help me out, I remember it was like the old cast of MAD TV though. Thanks for the help, but this man isn't the man who played the weatherman. It was the older skits by MAD TV. Because Bobby Lee was the news reporter and someone else was the weatherman.
Do you think that modern society people are less intelligent than the people born in the past? - Comparing people now to the people in the Victorian era perhaps? Where they would social by talking for hours as a means of entertainment? - Could it be possible that we are infected with a disease (something similar to mad cow) but we didn't know about it ourselves, which causes us to lose our basic thinking instincts like common sense, spelling and the lack of basic knowledge? - Too much technology, TVs, Computers, which doesn't leave much social time? - Is it because our society today leaves us with a pub, club or a disco for our only social time since everyone is far too busy working now? What's your view? And is there a cause?
Harry Potter? I think the first Harry Potter book was set in the 1990s but my friend thinks they were set in the 1960s because they have nothing modern like tvs and things! but in the 5th book when harry goes to the hearing they go via under ground train and the dursleys have tvs and all that... dudleyhas a computer and a playstation... so they cant be set in the 1960s.
So if Amish people don't want to interact with us, how do they make their living? Do they make any money? Do they pay taxes? And if they don't have cars and don't like modern technologies like TVs and cell phones, how are they able to commute and keep up with the world? The way they live seem very primitive to me. Please enlighten me more about this people. You think they have heard of the internet?
anybody know where i can buy a really cheap flat screen tv??? I work in a small hotel and need to buy 9 flat screen tvs to make the rooms look modern, but all i can find are nearly 200 quid each! only need 14 inch screen but im looking for the entire tv to be flat too.
Plasma TV problems? I was wondering if modern plasma tvs still suffer the problems that the older ones did (burn ins and extremely low life). I was wondering what the average life of a plasma screen is and if plasma tvs still suffer from burn ins. I was also wondering that if a burn in occurs can it be fixed? Thanks for the help.
What do the sistas want in a man (afr-am females only)? Sorry to bring race into the picture, but fact is, i've been raised around caucasion males and females all my life. I've learned the subtle ins and outs of that culture. And I say "that culture" because, as i've found out the hard way, young women of color respond quite differently to me than the youing caucasion women. Now I do know there's deep complex psychological and sexual-tension theories out there about black man/white female relationships and I accept that. But what I refuse to accept/believe is that all (or at least most) black females desire black men embodying the qualities celebrated in the modern hip-hop cuture. (i.e. thug, ganster, hustler, etc) Is it so bad to wear clothes w/o the logos? Is it so bad to be able to make my subjects and verbs agree? Is it so bad to not drive an expensive whip w/ crome rims and tvs? Seriously, I want to know your opinion. And i'm not knocking the culture, i'm just asking if conforming to it is the only way to get a sista now days?
This year is predicted to be a year of major sunspot activity. Greater than any recently. What problems? Since the advent of modern satellite communications and computer systems - possible dammages? How valid are the predictions? What may result? Anything we can do to protect our personal equipment (from cars to watches to phones to computers and TVs)?
Mystery Religion: Is there a religion that goes by the name, Go Ye? My father's parents had been followers for many years. My grandmother still is but it seems to be an underground following. I never learned or heard anything about it, i.e., the principles behind it, name, etc., other than it's based on the Old Testament. The followers are very conservative. They cannot own many modern things, such as TVs, DVD players, and PCs. The woman are expected to wear only dresses and to wear their hair up. They act as compliments to their husbands doing all the housework and womanly things as it was 40 years ago. The men are to never remove their shirts in public even to go swimming. However, they differ from the Omish and Mennonites in that they make use of modern appliances such as washing machines, automobiles, and certain electrical gadgets, in my observation, so long as the device doesn't allow mainstream pop culture into their lives. Only recently has my father's brother told me to look up Go Ye after falling out with this family.
What can I do about connecting a "converter box" to my small simple tv set that I bought for $19.00? As of recent months no one can just watch their old tv set anymore without one of those "converter boxes"( I think that is what they are called). The problem is that it seems that the people whom instigated the whole system do not consider that not all people have those modern flat screen tvs, and such. I have never owned the more technical types of television sets and never have had cable in my household. I am not too familiar with what has to be used or done with these kinds of sets and I guess there must be accessories for the newer styles of tv sets or at least wiring that is not as simple as plugging a regular wire into a regular electrical outlet. I rarely watch tv, which is good because I would miss it terribly since I no longer can even watch it for a favorite program every now and then. Nevertheless, I only have a small tv set that has a screen that is no more than six inches diagonally and it seems to be totally worthless and useless now. It has some receptacles in the back but when I borrowed a converter box from a relative of mine to see if it fits on my little tv set, it seems that the wires and jacks and such are not compatible. When I turn on the little tv set I only get a channel that gives constant information about installing a converter box. Do I have to spend money on an expensive tv set and also a converter box so as to watch some tv? Thanks. I guess I will have to spend a good deal of money no matter what, whether I keep my old cheap little tv set, or if I replace it. However I just don't see how those converter boxes can accomodate a tv with a screen that is only 6" diagonally Oh by the way, I also need to know how I can now use a small radio that has TV- band on it. Are the channels from 2-13 useless now ? I can't get the sound of the channels like I used to . Does anyone out there have answers?
Why are so many people Antisemitic? It's amazing. I know many people who seem "normal" in all aspects, not racists, not Fascistic and very well educated, yet the moment they think they can trust you they launch in a tirade against Jews. I hate it. I think Jews are indeed a chosen people. If you think about it, the fact that a group that is only 0.2% of the human population owns all major banks and insurance companies, controls all mass media conglomerates and has won over 50% of all science Nobel Prizes supports the idea that indeed God must love them to give them so much power. What do you tell to people who start badmouthing Jews? Even some university professors do it! I remind them that without Jews we wouldn't have computers, TVs, movies, planes, modern medicine, etc. but that seems to make them upset.
What will happen if we achieve full automation and completely eliminate the pain of childbirth? Man will have robots doing the work, and he will no longer have to work. He'll do as he please, and be even better than in eden, with tvs, internet, and modern technology. Women will also benefit from no longer having pain during childbirth, and will also avoid all work. What will be the religious response to this? What will God do(man would have evaded his punishment of working the land and and women's punishment of painful childbirth)? An example of completely pain free childbirth would be the use of advanced artificial wombs that were even healthier and better for the growing baby than the real thing.
McDonald's Makeover. Will McDonald's New Decor Bring Back Old and Bring In New Customers? If you stopped going to McDonald's re health concerns, will the following bring you back? McDonald's Makeover: Plasma Screens and Cafe Couches Your local McDonald's, with its hard plastic seats, was designed to move customers in and out fast. But now, with mood lighting, trendy artwork and fireplaces, it will convey a new message. After 50 years and billions of customers, the fast-food giant is getting a face-lift. Plasma-screen TVs, soft couches, coffee tables and wireless Internet access are just some of the new features customers will begin to see at their local McDonald's.The iconic red or brown "double mansard" rooftops — designed to catch the eye of passing motorists — will be replaced by something more sleek and modern. The traditionally kid-focused, kid-proof, interior is now decidedly grown up. There's mood lighting, trendy artwork and fireplaces. All 13,000 McDonald's restaurants in the United States will eventually .
Do you think the cars in "pimp my ride" are ugly???? I'm watching it right now and they paint them ugly colors! Sure they have cool TVs and all sorts or modern technologies but man are the cars funky looking! i guess because its pimp my ride....... one time they made a ford taurus try to look like a bmw. they put a bmw body kit it looked so fake hahaha!
Would you......could you? Could you live without all your modern conveniences like cell phones, computers, TVs, & your car for a whole entire month if someone offered you $1 million dollars to do it?
What subject would be good to write about in modern times to get a book published? A good topic. Something people want to read. Here was some of my ideas in general: Islam, Martial Arts, Education System, Comparitive Religion, Wrestling ( olympic style ), Quran in relation to modern science, tv ( or internet ) , and affect it causes on our youth, Success in Mixed Martial Arts competitions, Video Games, Learning a new language guide, Iran: Life of persians in the United States. Anymore ideas would be great. Thanks for your time and suggestions. Just pick from the topics I listed please.
Is modern TV comedy as crap as I think it is? I was brought up on some of the great sitcoms of the past, Steptoe and Son, Rising Damp, The Good Life, Porridge. When I watch, or try to watch, "modern" comedies like The Peep Show and The Royle family, I can't find a single thing to laugh at. Its just people in everyday situations, not humorous ones. If people laugh at this, then isn't there some air of cruelty about it? Some voyeuristic sense of superiority because someone acts like a prat? Yes there were such things in the older sitcoms, but the characters were fantasy, not so documentary realistic. Is it me or are these shows really the pretentious shite I think they are?
Where can I find more tv shows/novels on modern retellings of historical events, like Kings? I want to read some novels or watch some TV shows that are a retelling of historical events but with a modernized. Like the Kings tv series which is a retelling of the David story, or like one of Ceaser but as the President of US instead of king of Rome.
What type of stories are retellings/reimaginings/modern retellings like Wicked and where can I find more? I am inerested in novels, tv shows, comics that are revisionist or retelings like Wicked and Looking Glass Wars or modern retellings of old stories like the TV show Kings.
Who are common modern Vampires in Popular Culture? From a feared monster to a fascinated pop culture icon, Vampires have evolved considerably since their conception. Popular culture has twisted the myth of Vampires into a commonly accepted "creature of the night." In any medium (books, tv, movies, poems, etc), who are some noted modern Vampires in popular culture and what do they contribute to the culture that makes them stand out? Reference links are appreciated.
How in touch is Mccain with modern technology? Just curious...he looks like he would know more about sputnik and old-fashioned TV sets and gramophones...not modern technology.
What do you think is the signficance of bees in modern TV Sci-Fi? First X-Files now in the new series of Doctor Who where a character in passing mentions that the "....bees are disappearing." Check for bees disappearing on the web. They are going.
What are some examples of modern versions of Greek choruses in movies or on TV? I'm particularly interested in the use of Greek-chorus style characters on television. I have several examples (like Statler and Waldorf on the Muppet Show and even the interview portions of the Office to a more liberal extent), but I'm looking for some more. I know they exist. I can see flashes of examples in my head, I just can't put my finger on any of them in any concrete way. Thanks for the help!
Do tv adaptations make important literary works more accessible to a modern day audience? I'm doing an essay with this title and would be interested to know what u think. I'm basing the essay on Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
What contemporary work best exemplifies modern satire? What contemporary work (film, book, tv show, play, short story) best demonstrates mastery of modern satire? Is this your favorite work of satire?
How sensitive are modern-day hard drives to magnetic fields? Back in the old days when 5 1/4" floppy disks were the newest and greatest thing, we were sternly advised to avoid exposing them to any sort of magnetic field which included the computer monitor, the TV, the top of the computer itself, etc. My question is if the same sort of care needs to be taken with modern-day hard drives (e.g. the ones that are in the iPod or the ones that are in the external USB connected hard drives)? Thanks in advance!
Do you think we have reached the future? Okay so back in the day we thought of the future as squarey modern houses, plasma and flat lcd tvs, touch screens, high tech gadgets like 25 megapixel cameras... and now 30 megapixel camera coming out soon. Then there's the ultra mini laptops and compact mobiles and so on. Though we have all of this now. All were missing are the hover cars and houses being built up in space... or the clouds. So what do you think? Is what we have now futuristic enough for you? And also, do you think its safe to keep upgrading? Also... do you think we have so far achieved what we once thought of as the 'future'?
Do white people owe black people anything? I still cant understand why the hell white people are racist after 400 years of Evil - a whole race of people being EVIL toward another race. Millions died in the most Evil ways for over 400 years... I mean: four HUNDRED years... Come on man, thats a damn long time!! Imagine what that means to modern black people with names like 'THOMAS'... that ain't a damn black name.. come on , white people! I love all people, but god damn, how can you guys still sit down in front of your TVs every night and not do anything to help a race of people that you have damn near destroyed... OK, CALM DOWN, I know it's not you personally the facts are that black people are still suffering the effects of 400 years of slavery and all the responsible white people are dead or dying then I'm sorry man but surely someone, somewhere has to shoulder some kind of responsibility - even if it is just to stop the racism (some blatant, some more subtle) that is found in all four corners of the press & daily society? WOAH.. I am not a racist and i dont think all or most white people are racist, half my family is white, but i do think White people owe black people understanding of our situation, After slavery we did'nt anything but a pat on the back and the ghetto, am i wrong to ask this question? Some of you misunderstood me, but thats OK =) I expected most of the negitive answers.
Is new technology TOO expensive? Ipods, Plasmas TVs, Mobile phones, PCs, Laptops, etc - It seems so many new gadgets are coming out and were told we MUST have them. But forking out £120 for an Ipod is ridiculous! What happened to £20 for the Walkman, like the '90s? Do you think modern technology costs too much on purpose?
Gaming Chair - Can't decide!!! which one should I go for? Hi, I'm looking for a gaming chair which I can use with my xbox 360, and from what I have seen so far the pyramat PM420w seems pretty good, and I found a deal on it from Curry's for £80. can anyone tell me if this is a good idea? Please put forward any other suggestions, but please make sure it is a maximum price of £120, but I would much prefer one around £100. Another thing I wanted to know is what I need in the way of connectivity to TVs, as my tv is not-so-modern and has only RCA and scart connections. will this do? any help greatly appriciated.
Can anyone be Amish or are you born into it? can anyone join there community , if they have been modern before. Do amish have ac in the summer , and radio, computer or tvs ? Have you ever been to Amish country , is it like little house on the prarie show,? thanks thanks....
Have you fallen asleep with the TV on.........? And had a dream where you hear the TV and see the images in your mind? That happened to me the other day. I was laying in bed. Modern Marvels "Last Stand Of The 300" was on. I had a dream it was the last day of school, and the program was on TVs all around the school. Have you had similar experiences?

"two-pole magnetrons were developed in the 1920s by Albert Hull at General Electric's Research Laboratories (Schenectady, New York)" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavity_magnetron#History Also a important American invention is the Audion: "De Forest is one of the fathers of the "electronic age", as the Audion helped to usher in the widespread use of electronics" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_DeForest The first working transistor was invented in America. It was one of the most important inventions of the 20th century. "John Bardeen and Walter Brattain and William Shockley received the Nobel Prize in 1956 for the invention of the transistor." http://inventors.about.com/library/weekly/aa061698.htm http://www.pbs.org/transistor/background1/events/miraclemo.html http://www.cedmagic.com/history/transistor-1947.html Edison invented the first "working" lightbulb. He received two patents for it.
what movie is this? I saw this movie and it was about these 2 teenagers that were home alone and their tv broke so they called the tv repair man an the man gave them a new remote control and he told them that this will control all the tvs and when the kids used it, it pulled them into this tv show were everything is in black and white. In the Movie the Tv show that the kids watched was a marathon of this popular show that they wanted to watch. Then once there in the show they change the plot of the show and brings it to the modern century and so it turns the show in color. Does anyone know what this Movie was called? i think it was made in the 80's or 90's
Why does technology/computers improve so rapidly? How is it that people are able to make electronics and computers that are faster and hold so much information in so little time? What makes it so that people can make such incredible creations in so little time? I mean look at the modern computers/tvs/cell phones now compared to them 10 years ago. Its amazing. I bought my computer just last year and for the same price now, I can get something with twice the speed and almost triple the memory and hard drive space.
Christmas for my kids? What are some gift ideas as well as stocking stuffer ideas for my kids. I have a 14 year old daughter, and three 15 year olds (a girl and 2 sons). They are all "modern" with the technology and styles these days. No cell phones, ipods, tvs or game systems because they have all that. They have a Wii, so maybe some games? What are you asking for if you're this age... or what are you buying your kids if they are this age?
how do you connect an Atari to a modern TV? theres little things that you can put screws into and they make the connection...but newer tvs dont have those screws in the back...its all cable so idk...help?
Why do Christians love to get in the way of justice so much? Modern Christianity seems to have adopted the attitude of "forgive all criminals, and support lighter sentences and punishments for them". This is part of why I drifted away from Christianity in the first place. How many Christians have been attacked by criminals, and have "turned the other cheek", essentially encouraging them to go on rampages, expecting the same treatment from other Christian victims? I remember when that worthless gangster Tookie was on trial, we finally got the piece of garbage executed, but it was made substantially more difficult by those damn Christians who got in our way (But we can't execute him! He wrote children's books!) Christians will learn one way or the other that you don't eliminate crime or evil by "love" or their childish fantasies - you eliminate (or drastically reduce) crime by making criminals FEAR committing them, not by giving them big-screen TVs and candy-boxes in prison. The current spate of Christians calling for leniency because the criminals "had a bad past", or how the Catholic church has been aiding illegal criminals now for quite some time. Numerous examples.
Would you go to a place like this? So, me and friends have been talking about a type of business. We're not really sure how many people would actually go to a type of business like this, so we're asking around! This is a type of business directed towards gamers. Basically, it would be like an arcade, but for video games instead. (Maybe even arcade games later.) The idea of this business is to make the experience better than what you can get in your own home. Things this would include: - Individual rooms - Large TVs - Excellent sound systems - Gaming Tournaments - Light control (different light settings for the room. So if you're playing a horror game, you can darken the room with dark purple lighting ect) - Modern atmosphere Other things to maybe add: - D&D rooms - Arcade games - Cosplay (We could even allow for costumes for the staff, as long as it doesn't get in their way) It could be an interesting business, if it actually worked. So, would you go to such a business? Is there anything that would be added to make it better? ^^ Sound proofing would definately be something to look into, even if there weren't cosplays. Due to the fact that people may want to have their valume a bit louder anyway. How we would make money off of that, well. They would most likely have some form of fee to spend a certain amount of time there. I'll agree, that is probably my biggest worry about this business. It would cost a lot of money to make, but if enough people would be willing to go, it would be worth it.
