Is science worse than religion?
I have read often on Y!A that Christianity/Islam and religion in general is the worst thing to ever happen to humanity. It's often stated that more people have been killed in the name of religion than from anything else. How naive. People will kill for country, their King, for land, power, resources, etc..Religion is just an easy excuse. The real reason is that it's just in our nature. So my contention is that religion, and ALL it's wars will never be able to destroy the earth, only science will achieve this. Without science and the technologies that come from it, there would be NO: laser guided nuclear tipped missles, cars / industry that produce Global Warming, mass deforestation, WWI, WWII, War in Iraq, Guns, Televisions that pollute our minds with garbage, Multi-Billion Dollar Global Corporations, etc..etc..etc... When Religion ruled this planet, we just killed other people, once "science" came around, we started killing everything and will destroy earth And if you are going to say that "people" destroy, not science and technology, the same can be said of religion, except that religion didn't invent the atom bomb. hey karate, that isn't an answer...2 points is all you wanted i guess Just for clarification, I firmly believe in the benefits of faith in God, and I'm a Christian. This question is aimed more for the non-religious / anti-religious chaz 420, what good is all that stuff if we're all DEAD. One more time...People Kill..not God. I don't want to live in cave, just want to know if medicines and vaccines are worth anything if Global Warming KILLS everything. NO SCIENCE - NO NUKES!! get it? weemaryanne I hope you're right, I hope that we never have to see a day when a nuke destroys entire cities...oops that's already happened...enjoy your coffee...

- Science worse than religion? NO WAY
- Science is a double sided weapon. It can be used for offence as well as defence. Science has the power to vanquish the human race. Religion is the solace to the strife torn society. Wars do not take place due to religions. they take place due to the misunderstanding of religious doctrines. Neither did jesus or prophet muhammed preached religion for their own benefits...they did it for the better of the society....it is we fools who fight within ourselves on the names of allah and jesus. All religions preach the same thing. It is the solace to the ailing world. Only religion can prevent an impending WW3.Only religion has the power to change minds.
- MATH IS WORSE THAN ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- hey religion is simple. just worship the LORD and HE will keep you safe but you have to try being good. GOD will take care of science in HIS own time
- To add to your list, there would also be no medicines to cure or treat certain illnesses, no computer to talk about how technology ruin's the world, or a stove to cook your food and a dishwasher to wash your dishes. I would miss taking a hot shower in the morning as well.
- Adopting true religion, is the protection for humanity from bad science or the ill use of science. A true scientist who believes in Allah, will only work the best of humans, to please Allah.
- Stupid question and then again if YOU want to live in a cave wearing animal skins that up to you.I'm anti war as well.science isn't just death.
- You know well your answers. Science is more than a Divine Comedy. That's what they think religions are. But them, they are the most imbecile, moron, idiots the world has ever encountered with.
- you say science kills, but science saves lives too. if you ask most scientists, the goal of science is to better society, yeah weapons come from technology, but so do new lifesaving medical procedures and prescription drugs. religion kills people in the name of something good ? how can that be. if god is such a high and noble power than why does he allow people to kill in his name. Alla as well, why are muslims killing in the name of their god ? i quote "when religion ruled this planet, we just killed other people, once "science" came around, we started killing everything and will destroy earth". even if science makes killing more effecient people are still dying for the same stupid reason, God!
- NO. with science we can know about God.. The Almighty of the world.
- I think both science and religion are positive forces when used appropriately. However, people often use both for their own selfish agendas.
- Religion IS, Science IS - there is no getting rid of either of them, they are natural outgrowths of human beings...they address different questions currently, Science - the How of things, religion the Why of things...they don't need to conflict necessarily. Which is worse? The answer will only be an opinion... while I am no fan of organized religion myself I recognize that it has done a huge amount of good in the world and is a comfort to millions of people...who am I to say it is bad...Science has made the quantity and quality of life better for millions - in life it is unusual to find black and white...it is mostly gray - lighter or darker depends on where you stand....BTW, the worse thing of all without a doubt is Reality TV.
- hahaha Lol@nuclearbunnies. heheh funny and cute
- I disagree. If not for science and technology, most of us wouldn't even be here to debate this question. The Industrial Revolution made it possible for many more children to live into adulthood, and for many more people to live long and productive lives. Increased production made everybody better off. Without it, the world's population would be a mere fraction of what it is now. As for the damage wrought by the products of science, you could argue that any tool can be destructive in the wrong hands. Would you destroy the hard-won technology of metal-working, in an attempt to get rid of every knife and ax on the planet? -- you couldn't even if you wanted to. Even if you could destroy the tools, the knowledge cannot be stuffed back into the bottle like some recalcitrant genie. We have to live with the results of our actions, that's true. I'll take my chances any day on a world equipped with coffeemakers and neutron bombs, over a world lit only by fire.
- Religion has also stood in the wy of many medical advances such as vacination and (currently) stem cell research. So it isn't just the fanaticism of the believers wanting to kill those who disagree with them, it is also these believers standing in the way of science trying to help them. Like religion, science isn't a monolithic entity. Most scientists are really striving to make life better for everyone. Imagine you life without electricity (no computers!), no cars (or ambulances, fire trucks, etc), less food (what, no agriculture?). Those nuclear weapons were designed originally to stop the Nazis. They contiunues after the defeat of Germany because we were still at war. Many of the scientists associated with the Manhattan Project strenuously argued against ever using the atom bomb on actual cities. It was the military and those scientists that felt such force was justified that supported the use of these weapons. Religion, on the other hand, inspired the crusades, inspires terrorist attcks today (not just from Moslems either) and in the past (Northern Ireland, anyone?). By promoting hatred and division, religion gives the groundwork that will use the power science gives to destroy the world.
- I don't see the reasons for the whole science vs. religion thing. They're completely different things and one doesn't have to be, and isn't, better than the other.
- Science is knowledge, knowledge is power. The Church has always been antagonistic towards science for that reason. It wants to control the population and by keeping it's followers ignorant, it can control them through fear and superstitious nonsense. Educated people do not accept the existence of mythical gods. Religion is a conditioning ground to brainwash children into blindly accepting authority. Whether it be the authority of the church or governments. Why do you think governments grant churches a tax-free status. Both Churches and Religions despise Atheists because they cannot be controlled and manipulated. Example, how many of the 6 million Jews killed in the Holocaust were actually killed by Hitler? They were ALL killed by Christians! Christians are so gullible that they believe and accept whatever anyone in authority tells them. Atheists are skeptics, they question everything ! They demand proof and supporting evidence of any claim. Governments cannot organize wars and armies comprised of atheists, they always place their own ethics first and would question every command given. Only pious theists can be recruited to fight the immoral and futile wars waged by our power hungry politicians. It is governments comprised of religious fanatics who budget to provide the necessary funding to the military in order to permit the development of military technology.
