Modern TVs

Dvd players never seem to last more than a couple of days when attached to my Plasma TV in my bedfroom. Why?

I have tried several brand names & all have the same result. During playback suddenly the laser seems to get stuck & it makes a funny noise, then the DVD player will no longer read ANY disc & is essentially garbage. I have it on a new surge protector & have tried placing it it elsewhere but I am limited by the length of the cable. Also, I have a DVD player attached to 2 other televisions (both LCD) in the house, both have worked great for years. Could the plasma TV somehow have something to do with this, or should I call out the paranormal activity experts? Please help!

  1. why don't you try plugging the dvd players that you use on different tv's onto a separate power supply and use a long cord - that'd be the first trouble shooting step... could just be a problem that you have with one dvd player, but not the other...
  2. It can't be the TV. The TV has nothing to do with the DVD player as far as electricity or the way it runs. It has to be the surge protector. I would try and plugging the player directly into the socket or use another surge protector and see what happens.
  3. You might be having a bad ground on that wall outlet. Who knows.
  4. It sounds like either there is a problem with the connection or the plasma TV itself. Perhaps your plasma TV has a bad connection that is shorting out the DVD players. I would have the TV looked at before you ruin any more DVD players. They should be able to test the connection. * * * Always submit "thumbs up" ratings for good answers! * * * _ _ _ _ _
  5. Could be the Plasma TV's ground is floating, or worse, is a "hot" ground. When asking a question like this, give the brands and model numbers of the components, as this might be helpful to answer the question.
  6. I think most Plasma TVs require a HD ( High Definition) signal. Your DVD player likely is not an HD DVD, so there might be some issues with the television not recognizing a non HD signal. It might be causing some kind of back surge which is trashing the laser in the DVD player. Also, make sure you have the DVD hooked up right to the TV. It's got to be the TV, I think. Also check out that surge protector. It might be faulty.
  7. Iwould consider having an electrician come out a look at the plug site it may not be grounded properly and is sending surges through to the dvd player. If its the same dvd player you keep buying maybe its just crap step to a better player and make sure you have the proper connections for your plasma HD cable etc why spend the money on the plasma and then have crappy cables when you can hook-up HD.
  8. Curious situation. I would eliminate the electrical service as a culprit here, and say probably ther eis a short or other defect in teh TV causing some signal or maybe even just current to flow back through your TV"s input. I think that if you were having electrical service issues it would have killed your TV too. What I would do is send back the TV, and have an electrician do a check on your service.
