Modern TVs

Which modern household appliance consumes the most electricity over time? this includes TVs, computers, etc.?

  1. Air conditioner followed by refrigerator and freezer. TV and computer are not big power gobblers especially if you turn off and unplug when not in use.
  2. obviously it should be the air conditioning system !!
  3. Depends on personal habbits, geography, building design..... An A/C unit in texas will consume MUCH more electricity over time that an A/C unit in alaska. Alaska may use much more electricity in a water heater than would be required in texas..... Someone may take 15 showers a day and like the temperature of the house set ad 95 degrees as where someone else may take one per day and set the thermostat at 65 degrees....
  4. The larger the motor the larger the load. Your A/C, water heater (if it's electric), and stove/range/oven (once again if it's electric) will be the biggest loads. The reason that the power companies don't like A/C loads is due to the fact that their loads aren't purely resistive loads like the WH and range. Their loads include reactive power but that's a different topic. Computers and TV's will also consume electricity when they are "off." The TV's because they are waiting to be turned on and the computers because several of the other components have power supplies (either the wall warts or the big bricks) that will actually suck power just due to the fact that they are plugged in.
